Eric Fillion is an Assistant Professor at the School of Languages and Literatures (SOLAL) specializing in French Studies at the University of Guelph. He concurrently serves as Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI). Holding a PhD in History, his research bridges music's social role, countercultural movements, and intercultural relations. His work focuses on postwar cultural spheres in Canada, Quebec, and Francophone contexts, emphasizing music festivals, diasporic soundscapes, and improvisation. He founded Tenzier, an archival label for Quebec avant-garde music, and co-edits Critical Studies in Improvisation. Notable publications include JAZZ LIBRE et la révolution québécoise and Distant Stage, exploring Quebec-Brazil cultural diplomacy and jazz’s sociopolitical dimensions.
His current projects examine music festivals’ historical trajectories and diasporic social movements’ sonic histories. He collaborates widely, co-editing interdisciplinary works such as Ripple Effects on music festival futures. Fillion’s background as a musician deeply informs his research methodology.
