Eric Descheemaeker is Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Law School, specializing in private law with focus on non-contractual obligations. His research examines tort law, unjust enrichment, comparative legal history, defamation, privacy law, and damages. He joined Melbourne Law School in 2017 after serving as Reader in European Private Law at the University of Edinburgh.
Professor Descheemaeker completed his legal education at Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne University (bachelor's and master's degrees), London School of Economics (LL.M.), and University of Oxford (D.Phil.). His doctoral research on historical comparative analysis of wrongs was published as 'The Division of Wrongs: A Historical Comparative Study' (Oxford University Press, 2009).
Honors include honorary positions as Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford's Institute of European and Comparative Law, Research Scholar at McGill University's Paul-André Crépeau Centre, and Honorary Research Associate at the University of Cape Town. He has been visiting professor at Cambridge University, Paris-II Panthéon-Assas University, Sciences Po Paris, and University of Pennsylvania.
