Eric Carlsson is a Teaching Professor of History in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Letters & Science. His research and teaching focus on early modern Europe and the Atlantic world, particularly the intersection of religion and Enlightenment thought from 1650 to 1800.

Professor Carlsson's research interests include intellectual and religious history, with emphasis on theology, biblical scholarship, supernatural beliefs, death and the afterlife, skepticism, Jewish-Christian relations, and secularization. He is currently writing a book on Johann Salomo Semler and German Enlightenment debates on demonology, anti-Judaism, and biblical interpretation.
His recent scholarly work, including publications in Oxford University Press volumes, examines the Protestant Enlightenment, eighteenth-century theological developments, and Pietism. These contributions highlight his expertise in the historical turn in Enlightenment theology and the evolution of religious thought in early modern Europe.
