Dr. Eric Capo serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University's Faculty of Science and Technology. His research employs molecular ecology approaches including metagenomics and sedimentary DNA analysis to investigate microbial responses to environmental changes in aquatic systems.
His primary research examines how climate-induced deoxygenation, eutrophication, mercury pollution, and salinity transitions affect microbial communities across marine and freshwater ecosystems. By integrating paleolimnological records with contemporary data, Dr. Capo reconstructs historical ecosystem dynamics to predict future ecological trajectories under climate change scenarios.
Dr. Capo's publications demonstrate consistent focus on anthropogenic impacts on aquatic microbiomes, with recent work exploring mercury biogeochemistry, antibiotic resistance evolution, and microbial community responses to environmental stressors. His methodological innovations in sedimentary DNA analysis provide novel insights into long-term ecological patterns.
He leads the Eric Capo Lab and participates in interdisciplinary collaborations including the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research. His BLADE project (2025-2026) pioneers drone-enabled environmental DNA approaches for biodiversity monitoring in lacustrine systems.
