Dr. Eric Caplan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) at McGill University, affiliated with the Faculty of Education. His research focuses on modern Jewish life, social justice within Judaism, and the legacy of Mordecai Kaplan. Dr. Caplan co-founded and serves as Vice-President of the Mordecai Kaplan Center for Jewish Peoplehood, promoting dialogue on Jewish educational issues. He holds a PhD in Jewish Studies from McGill University, an MA in Jewish Education from the Hebrew University (Israel), and a BA in Jewish Studies/Religious Studies from the University of Toronto.
His research interests include reconstructing Jewish educational thought through Kaplan's writings and analyzing contemporary Jewish liturgical practices. Notable works include the 2002 book From Ideology to Liturgy, which is being reissued with a new preface. He is currently editing Kaplan's 1951–1978 diaries and compiling an anthology of Jewish social activism writings.
Dr. Caplan's publications span theological analysis, liturgical studies, and Jewish communal issues. His work frequently bridges historical scholarship with contemporary Jewish identity debates, emphasizing the role of education in sustaining communal values.
