Eric Blaauw is a Lecturer in Addiction Sciences at Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen since 2016, with additional appointments at the Center of Expertise Healthy Aging and in Rehabilitation. He is simultaneously employed as a Forensic psychologist at VNN (Addiction care Northern Netherlands) and senior researcher since 2012. His academic career spans over three decades with significant contributions to forensic psychology, addiction sciences, and mental health within criminal justice settings across multiple Dutch institutions.
Dr. Blaauw holds dual doctorates: a Doctorate in Social Sciences from Leiden University (1996) and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Groningen (1991). His extensive educational background includes specialized forensic training such as admission to the Dutch Register of Court Experts (2012), NIP recognized supervisor basic registration psychodiagnostics (2012), and completion of Pro Justitia Rapporteur Training at the NIFP (2012). His academic journey began with preparatory studies in Psychology at the University of Groningen (1986-1987) following technical education in Computer Science and Laboratory Sciences.
Dr. Blaauw's research program demonstrates remarkable consistency in addressing critical issues at the intersection of mental health and criminal justice. His work focuses on addiction treatment within forensic contexts, suicide prevention in detention settings, stalking behaviors and victimology, risk assessment of offenders, and mental health services in prisons. He has developed numerous evidence-based training programs for forensic professionals, judges, and psychologists on risk assessment instruments including HCR-20, PCL-R, and SVR-20. His research methodology combines clinical psychology with criminal justice applications, emphasizing practical implementation of scientific findings.
