Eric Betzig is an Investigator at the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) since 2005. Born in 1960 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he earned a B.S. in Physics from Caltech and a Ph.D. in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University. His career includes work at AT&T Bell Labs, a hiatus in his father’s manufacturing company, and a return to pioneering optical imaging technologies.
- Education:
- B.S. in Physics, California Institute of Technology
- Ph.D. in Applied and Engineering Physics, Cornell University
Betzig is renowned for developing super-resolved fluorescence microscopy, enabling imaging beyond the diffraction limit. His lab focuses on adaptive optics, lattice light sheet microscopy, and reducing photodamage in live-cell imaging. Key contributions include Bessel beam plane illumination and pulse splitters for neural activity imaging.
Scientific Awards:
- Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2014) for super-resolved fluorescence microscopy
Betzig has mentored numerous researchers, including alumni like Na Ji (UC Berkeley), Wes Legant (University of North Carolina), and Dong Li (Institute of Biophysics, CAS). His work bridges physics, engineering, and biology to advance biomedical imaging.
