Eric Bergshoeff is an Honorary Professor in Theoretical High-Energy Physics at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering, holding the Willem de Sitter Chair in Theoretical Physics. Formerly director of the Van Swinderen Institute (VSI) for Particle Physics and Gravity until September 2017, he remains actively engaged in quantum gravity research and institutional activities within the Cosmic Frontier group.
His research centers on unifying quantum mechanics with gravity through non-relativistic string theory and geometry, investigating whether relativity is essential for quantum gravity frameworks. This work addresses extreme conditions like the Big Bang and black holes, while also applying non-relativistic geometry to the fractional quantum Hall effect in condensed matter systems. Key methodologies involve Carroll gravity formulations and brane dynamics within supergravity contexts.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a concentrated exploration of non-relativistic limits in gravity theories, with significant emphasis on Carroll symmetry applications, M-brane dynamics, and fermionic formulations.
