Eric Baković is a Professor and Chair of Linguistics at the University of California San Diego, specializing in phonological theory and computational phonology. His research focuses on formal characterization of human sound patterns, typological analysis, and computational models of phonological processes. He leads the San Diego Phonetics & Phonology Research Community (The Phon Company) and the Computational Phonology Research Group.
Recent work explores interaction typology of phonological processes, computational complexity of phonological patterns, and empirical challenges to theoretical claims about vowel harmony. Key contributions include analyses of bidirectional harmony in Maasai and Turkana, unbounded circumambient patterns, and subregular complexity boundaries in phonology.
His research has been published in journals like Phonology, Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, and Language, with a focus on formal phonology, typological universals, and computational approaches. He actively contributes to the linguistic community through editorial work and presentations at international phonology conferences.
