Eoin McGuirk is the J.C. Keogh and Family Assistant Professor of Economics at Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences, with affiliations at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). His research focuses on political economy, development economics, and applied microeconomics, particularly examining the causes and consequences of political violence, climate change impacts on pastoral communities, and the economic roots of conflict in Africa.
McGuirk holds a PhD in Economics from Trinity College Dublin and was a Fulbright Scholar at UC Berkeley. He employs natural experiments to identify causal relationships in his work, such as studying how global food prices influence African conflict events and how climate change intensifies resource-based conflicts.
His teaching includes courses like Basic Econometrics and Advanced Seminar in Economics at Tufts. Notable publications include analyses of moral hazard in U.S. congressional decisions on war, agricultural policy mismatches in pastoral regions, and the interplay between democratic accountability and investment policies.
