Dr. Enrico Castillo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, based in the Center for Social Medicine. As an academic community psychiatrist and health services researcher, he focuses on enhancing public systems to address health inequities through community-government-academic partnerships.
His expertise spans health equity, structural competency, and social medicine, with concentrated work on homelessness and housing policy, incarceration, and serious mental illness. He actively develops curricula for graduate medical education and promotes physician advocacy in domestic and international contexts through scientific engagement.
Dr. Castillo has secured over $1.9 million in research funding as PI/Co-PI, including a NIMH-funded project on the jail-to-homelessness pipeline for individuals with serious mental illness. He holds national leadership roles with the Association of American Medical Colleges' Mental Health Advisory Board, the American Psychiatric Association, the National Academies' New Voices Program, and the California State Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health.
