Engelbert Winter is a Professor of Ancient History at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, where he holds the position as an Extraordinary Professor (Außerplanmäßiger Professor) in the Department of Ancient History (Seminar für Alte Geschichte). He has led numerous research projects, including excavations at Doliche in Turkey, focusing on ancient religious history, Roman-Persian relations, and the cultural landscape of Asia Minor. His academic career spans over three decades, with habilitation in 1995 and a PhD in 1987 from the University of Münster. He has also held visiting professorships, including at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.
Winter's research interests include the religious and political dynamics of the Roman Near East, particularly the cult of Iupiter Dolichenus. He has directed projects such as the Cluster of Excellence 'Religion and Politics' and led excavations at Doliche, uncovering the central sanctuary of this deity. His work bridges archaeology, history, and religious studies, with a focus on cultural entanglement and transformation in antiquity.
He has supervised doctoral theses on topics ranging from Armenian kingship to preventive warfare strategies in Roman antiquity. Awards include the 2009 World Prize for the Book of the Year from the Islamic Republic of Iran for his work on Rome and Persia in Late Antiquity. Winter is an active member of institutions like the German Archaeological Institute and has delivered lectures globally, emphasizing the intersection of archaeology, religion, and cultural identity.
