Emma Snowden is an Assistant Professor of Medieval History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (College of Arts & Sciences, Department of History). Her research focuses on cross-cultural interactions in the medieval Mediterranean, particularly examining Muslim-Christian relations, identity formation, and gender dynamics in Iberia and North Africa.

Her current book project, Narrating Conquest and Colonization in the Medieval Western Mediterranean, analyzes Arabic, Latin, and Romance chronicles (8th-14th centuries) to explore how shared historical frameworks emerged during periods of political and religious conflict. She specializes in premodern Islamic history, interfaith relations, gender studies, and medieval connectivity between North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
Her publications reveal a focus on frontier-making in Iberian conquest narratives and Arab identity in Islamic literary traditions. She has received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, American Historical Association, Medieval Academy of America, and American Institute for Maghrib Studies.
