Professor Emma Rand is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of York. Her work focuses on reproducible data analytical methods for biologists, medics, and chemists. She emphasizes collaborative, fun learning environments and has developed the LeaRn app with colleagues to teach R programming. Her teaching philosophy prioritizes skill acquisition through coding and transparency in biological data analysis.
Her research spans diverse biological fields including wind farm collision-risk modeling, anaerobic digestion metabolomics, and neuroblastoma transcriptomics. She collaborates with research-active colleagues, integrating experimental design, statistical analysis, and reproducible workflows. Key projects include investigating mesenchymal stromal cell biology and clinical trial standardization.
Professor Rand has twice won the York Student Union Excellence Award for Teaching, reflecting her commitment to pedagogy. She is an instructor for the Royal Society of Biology and Biochemical Society, and her work is supported by grants from the University of York’s Strategic Teaching and Learning Projects fund.
