Emma K Adam is the Edwina S. Tarry Professor of Human Development and Social Policy at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy. She is also a Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, where her work bridges developmental science with policy applications. Her research focuses on the developmental psychobiology of stress and sleep, examining how everyday experiences impact stress biology with implications for emotional health, physical health, and academic outcomes.
Dr. Adam's educational background includes:
- PhD in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota (1998)
- MA in Public Policy from the University of Chicago (1998)
- MA in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Toronto (1992)
- BS in Psychology from the University of Toronto (1990)
Her research interests center on developmental psychology with a focus on stress biology and sleep patterns in children, adolescents, and young adults. She investigates how everyday experiences impact stress biology, racial/ethnic disparities in stress, the impact of early adverse relationship experiences, and how variations in stress and sleep affect executive functioning and academic performance. Her work also includes implementing randomized control trial intervention projects designed to reduce stress and promote positive outcomes in youth through meditation, mindfulness apps, mentoring, and ethnic identity development.
Dr. Adam's research demonstrates consistent focus on stress physiology across multiple contexts, with particular attention to how racial discrimination gets biologically embodied and contributes to health disparities. Her recent publications show expanding interest in intervention strategies and the impacts of broader societal factors like economic decline and the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent stress.
Her scientific achievements have been recognized through several prestigious awards:
- National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship (2003-04)
- William T. Grant Scholars Award (2004-09)
- Curt Richter Award from the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology (2013)
- President-Elect of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology (2020-2023)
- Lyle Spencer Research Award (2017)
- Outstanding Professor Award, School of Education and Social Policy (2013)
Dr. Adam serves on editorial boards for leading journals including Biological Psychology, Psychoneuroendocrinology, and Stress. She directs the COAST (Contexts of Adolescent Stress and Teens) research lab, which employs innovative methodologies including daily diary studies and physiological stress measures to understand real-time impacts of stress on youth development. Her work has significant implications for educational policies, mental health interventions, and efforts to reduce health disparities.
