Emma Heaney is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Faculty Advisor in Experimental Writing at New York University’s College of Arts & Science, within the Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement program. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Smith College and a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine. Her research bridges comparative literature, feminist studies, trans studies, and Marxist theory, focusing on the transformation of queer and trans identities across modernist works.
Her major publications include *The New Woman* (2017), analyzing trans feminine allegories in modernist works, and the edited collection *Feminism Against Cisness* (2023), which critiques cisnormative ideologies. Her current work derives a theory of queer/trans identity transformation through 20th-century literature. She has held fellowships at MacDowell and the Marble House Project, alongside awards like the Renée Hubert Prize.
Teaching includes courses like *Writing the New Woman* and *Literature After Cisness*. She advises the Experimental Writing program and collaborates on public humanities projects, such as podcasts on queer history and feminist theory. Her interdisciplinary approach merges creative writing with scholarly critique, emphasizing decolonial praxis and intersectional frameworks.
