Emma Douglass is a Senior Lecturer in Learning Disabilities Nursing at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the HAS - Nursing and Midwifery department since 2013. She holds a PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons), and a PG Cert. Her teaching spans pre-registration nursing curricula, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, dissertation modules, and practice-focused learning disability nursing. Her research focuses on the application of the Mental Capacity Act in healthcare, decision-making support for adults with learning disabilities, and leveraging service user narratives for improved care.
Dr. Douglass completed a UWE-funded PhD using accessible qualitative methods to explore healthcare decision-making, supervised by Julie Mytton, Andy Gibson, and Sally Dowling. She has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects, including a study on infant-feeding decisions with women who have learning disabilities, producing an accessible film with the Misfits Theatre Company. She also contributed to an NHIR-funded feasibility study on Prism glasses for stroke patients with the University of Manchester.
Her work emphasizes knowledge mobilisation and accessible evaluations, having led multiple healthcare evaluations using qualitative methods. She maintains active collaborations with academic and community partners to translate research into practice.
