Professor Emma Cayley is Head of the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and a Professor of Medieval French at the University of Leeds. She specializes in late medieval French poetry, manuscript studies, and digital humanities. Previously, she held leadership roles at the University of Exeter and was a Junior Research Fellow at the Queen’s College, Oxford.

Her research focuses on the material and cultural contexts of medieval texts, particularly Alain Chartier and Christine de Pizan. She explores how textual materiality—manuscript layout, images, and paratexts—influences interpretation. Key themes include gender studies, literary communities, and the intersection of medieval texts with modern digital technologies.
Her digital humanities projects include the Exeter Book App, which digitized early manuscripts, and collaborations with Stanford University. She currently chairs the University Council of Modern Languages and edits the journal Encomia.
