Emma Camacho, PhD, is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) and the R³ Center for Innovation in Science Education (R3ISE), where she conducts research on melanin biosynthesis in human fungal pathogens and malaria-transmitting mosquitoes.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on understanding the biological role of melanin in pathogenic fungi such as Cryptococcus neoformans, particularly in cell wall architecture, host immune evasion, and virulence. She employs multidisciplinary approaches, including solid-state NMR and biochemical analyses, to probe melanin's structure and function. Her research extends to vector biology, exploring pigmentation and resistance mechanisms in Aedes aegypti.
Publication Trends: Her recent publications (2019–2025) reflect a strong focus on fungal pathogenesis, melanin biochemistry, and host-pathogen interactions. She frequently publishes in high-impact journals such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, mBio, and Cell Host & Microbe, often in collaboration with Arturo Casadevall. Her work bridges basic science and translational applications, including drug delivery and radioprotection.
Honors & Awards:
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (2017–2019)
- Scholarship, Young International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (YISHAM), 2015
- Excellence Scholarship, Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), 2009–2010
- Individual Scholarship, FONACIT, 2005–2008
Advising and Grants: While no direct advisees are listed, Dr. Camacho contributes to science education through the R3ISE Center, promoting interdisciplinary training. Her research has been supported by institutional fellowships and collaborative grants, particularly through JHMRI. She plays a key role in mentoring and advancing innovative approaches in biomedical science education.
Labs and Teams: Dr. Camacho is part of the Casadevall lab research network at Johns Hopkins, focusing on fungal pathogenesis and melanin biology. She collaborates across disciplines, including biophysics, immunology, and entomology, contributing to a broader understanding of microbial pigmentation and its implications for human health.
