Dr. Emma Boland is a Physical Oceanographer at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and Co-Director of the AI for the Study of Climate Risk Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Cambridge. She serves as a Sustainability By-Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge, and contributes to the NERC-funded CANARI and BIOPOLE projects.
- PhD in Atmosphere-Oceans Dynamics (2009-2013), University of Cambridge
Her research focuses on adjoint modeling, meso-scale eddy activity in polar regions, quasi-geostrophic dynamics, Lagrangian processes, and climate science communication. Recent work explores Southern Ocean heat transport, climate model validation, and anthropogenic impacts on ocean heat content.
Her publications highlight trends in adjoint modeling for climate sensitivity studies, Southern Ocean dynamics, and machine learning applications in polar oceanography. Key collaborations include the ORCHESTRA and DIMES projects.
Scientific awards include the Churchill College Sustainability By-Fellowship and British Science Association Media Fellowship.
Boland leads public engagement initiatives, including Cambridge Science Festival talks, and recruits PhD students via the University of Cambridge CREATES DLA and University of Southampton partnerships.
