Emily SOON is a Senior Lecturer of English Literature at the Singapore Management University (SMU), affiliated with the School of Social Sciences within the College of Integrative Studies. She joined SMU in 2020 as full-time faculty, focusing on cross-cultural literary exchanges between Asia and Europe across premodern and modern eras. Her interdisciplinary research bridges Singaporean cultural history, early modern literature, and world literature.
Dr. Soon holds a PhD in English from King’s College London (2019), an MPhil in Medieval and Renaissance Literature from the University of Cambridge (2012), and a BA (First Class Honours) in English and Related Literature from the University of York (2006). Prior academic roles include Research Fellow at the National Museum of Singapore (studying Shakespeare’s role in Singapore’s cultural history) and Curriculum Planning Officer in Singapore’s Ministry of Education. She has also taught Language Arts and Literature in an integrated programme school.
Her research interests span Singapore’s literary heritage, early modern European literature, and global interconnectedness in historical contexts. Recent publications analyze cross-cultural narratives in works like *Paradise Lost*, Jacobean court masques, and colonial Singaporean theatre. She teaches courses like *Big Questions: Asia and World Literature* and *Imagining the Self: Literature, Ethnicity, and Gender in Asia*.
Dr. Soon’s work addresses strategic priorities in Asia’s cultural growth, combining literary analysis with historical and socio-political frameworks. She contributes to strategic areas like Media, Culture, and Society within the College of Integrative Studies.
