Emily Roff is a Flora Philip Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. Previously, she was a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at Osaka University, Japan. She completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2022 with a thesis titled 'The size and shape of things: magnitude, diversity, homology.'
Her research focuses on numerical and homological invariants of metric spaces and graphs that derive from interpreting metric spaces as enriched categories. She is deeply engaged with enriched category theory and its applications both within and pure mathematics. Her work bridges abstract category theory with concrete geometric and topological structures, particularly through the lens of magnitude theory. She has made significant contributions to understanding magnitude homology, path homology, and the relationship between category theory and metric geometry.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on magnitude theory and homology of metric spaces, with increasing sophistication in handling complex structures like directed graphs and bigraded homology theories. Her work demonstrates strong connections between abstract categorical structures and concrete geometric applications, with numerous collaborations with leading researchers in category theory and algebraic topology.
