Dr. Emily Pica is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Science and Counseling at Austin Peay State University, where she has taught since Fall 2017. Her courses include PSYC 3050 (Career Development), PSYC 3180 (Research Methods), PSYC 4020 (Forensic Psychology), PSYC 4025 (Wrongful Convictions), and PSYC 4900 (Capstone).
Her educational background:
- Bachelor's degree from Mansfield University, Pennsylvania
- Master's degree in Applied Research from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
- PhD in Psychology (Forensic Psychology concentration) from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada
Dr. Pica's research centers on improving eyewitness identification accuracy to reduce wrongful convictions and analyzing factors influencing juror decision-making. She investigates post-exoneration experiences of the wrongfully convicted and their societal reintegration challenges. Her lab actively supports student-driven projects on topics including mass shooter perceptions and psychedelic-assisted therapy for military populations, emphasizing practical applications in forensic settings.
She mentors undergraduate research and field experiences across traditional and honors programs. As APSU's designated liaison, she manages partnerships with Montgomery County Juvenile Court (20/10 mentoring program pairing students with juvenile offenders) and Veteran's Treatment Court, where she supervises graduate assistants in clinical placements.
Her research lab maintains active collaborations with local judicial systems, providing students with hands-on forensic psychology experience through community-based interventions and courtroom observations.
