Dr. Emily Moylan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney. She is also a Member of both the Sydney Environment Institute and The Net Zero Institute. Her academic journey began with a PhD in 2011 from the Australian National University (ANU), initially focusing on astronomy before shifting to transport engineering.
Dr. Moylan's educational background includes:
- PhD (2011) from the Australian National University
Her research focuses on the reliability and variability of transport systems, applying big-data analysis techniques to complex problems that impact everyday travelers. She brings a unique perspective from her astronomy background to transport data analysis, creating tools that turn large datasets into meaningful information about transport system performance. Her work spans multiple transport modes and emphasizes the importance of reliability metrics in transport planning decisions. Recent publications demonstrate increasing focus on climate resilience in transport systems and the social equity implications of transport planning decisions.
Her notable achievements include:
- 2022: Towards measuring social impact of Net Zero transport initiatives (Research Grant)
- 2021: Equity Prize: Brown (Equity Prize)
- Reducing pedestrian crashes through better intersection design (Road Safety Innovation)
- Strategic scheduling and deployment of random breath and drug testing operations (Road Safety Innovation)
- Efficacy and Value In ExpeDited out of hospital arrEst care ANd ECMO CPR (ECPR) The EVIDENCE Study (Translational Research Grants Scheme)
Dr. Moylan actively supervises multiple PhD students working on diverse transport topics including urban speed limit policies, ridepooling systems, children's school travel behavior, urban economics, and sustainable urban form modeling. Her research group, TransportLab, focuses on empirical analysis of transport systems using innovative data sources.
