Emily Gilbert is an Associate Professor cross-appointed between the Canadian Studies Program at University College and the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto. She holds a PhD from the University of Bristol and has served as Vice-Principal at University College since 2020. Her research spans political geography, security studies, and critical military analysis, focusing on citizenship, border policies, and the intersection of money with militarism.
- Education: PhD, University of Bristol
Her research examines how geopolitical risk disciplines behavior and reshapes citizenship, particularly at the Canada-US border. She also investigates the militarization of climate change and the weaponization of money in counterinsurgency. Her work extends to visual and literary representations of Canadian identity.
While her most recent articles (2021-2015) analyze militarized humanitarianism, border elasticity, and military compensation practices, earlier publications (2015-2005) explore topics like economic warfare, legal jurisdiction in conflict zones, and neoliberal integration post-9/11. She has supervised numerous PhD and MA students in geography and security studies and secured multiple SSHRC research grants, including projects on war compensation (2011-2014) and currency history (2005-2008).
