Professor Emily Farran holds a faculty position at the University of Surrey's School of Psychology, within the Development, Education, Language and Outreach in Psychology (DevELOP) Research Group. Her academic role includes leading the Cognition, Genes and Developmental Variability (CoGDeV) Lab and serving as Academic Lead for Research Integrity and Culture. She specializes in spatial cognition, neurodevelopmental disorders, and the intersection of STEM education with cognitive development.
Dr. Farran earned her PhD from the University of Bristol in 2001, followed by academic roles at the University of Reading and UCL Institute of Education before joining Surrey in 2018. Her work has been funded by major bodies including the ESRC, British Academy, and Wellcome Trust. Key research focuses include spatial reasoning’s role in STEM success, genetic syndromes (e.g., Down, Williams), and open research practices.
Her research emphasizes translating findings into practice, exemplified by the Spatial Reasoning Toolkit and Spatial Cognition to Enhance Mathematical Learning (SPACE) project. Notable awards include the 2024 BPS Developmental Psychology Section Impact and Engagement Award. She supervises PhD students exploring topics like motor performance in neurodevelopmental disorders and spatial training interventions.
Farran advocates for open science through leadership in the UK Reproducibility Network. Her lab’s work spans experimental studies, systematic reviews, and interdisciplinary collaborations to address gaps in neurodevelopmental research and improve real-world outcomes for affected communities.
