Emilio Varrà

Emilio Varrà is a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Bologna, teaching Communication Methodologies and Techniques and Creative Writing and Visual Storytelling across programs including Comics and Illustration, Illustration for Publishing, Cinema and Audiovisual Languages, and Art Education and Communication.

His research centers on children's literature, graphic novels, and illustrated books, with expertise in childhood metaphors, the evolution of Italian children's literature, and visual storytelling. He founded the magazine Hamelin. Stories, figures, pedagogy and contributes to Lo straniero, Li.BeR, and Gli asini.

Varrà's recent publication Art as Reparation (2023) examines artistic responses to environmental crises through interdisciplinary lenses of art, education, and landscape studies, reflecting his focus on symbolic representation in contemporary visual narratives.

His teaching employs collaborative workshop methodologies where students collectively analyze literary, visual, cinematic, and musical texts to develop interpretive frameworks, with recent courses exploring the destabilized human-landscape relationship amid climate change.
