Emilie Snell-Rood is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on urban ecology, evolutionary biology, and entomology, with particular expertise in butterfly biology and responses to environmental stressors.
Her research interests span multiple areas of ecological science:
- Urban ecosystem dynamics and species adaptation to urban environments
- Butterfly biology, including life history traits and species interactions
- Heavy metal pollution effects on insect populations
- Behavioral plasticity and adaptation to environmental change
- Conservation biology with focus on pollinators and urban biodiversity
Dr. Snell-Rood's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on how urban environments impact butterfly physiology and evolution. Her work examines heavy metal accumulation in urban butterflies, sodium metabolism differences between sexes, and how geographic range size influences tolerance to environmental toxins. This research provides critical insights into how species adapt to human-altered landscapes and pollution.
She has received significant research funding for projects including:
- Documentation and Toxicity of Microplastics in Urban Ecosystems (2025-2028)
- Karner Blue Butterfly Insurance Population establishment in Minnesota (2023-2026)
- LTER: The Changing Nature of Cities: Ecological and Social Dynamics in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Urban Ecosystem (2021-2027)
- Heavy metal pollution and safe community food access in the Twin Cities (2022-2023)
- Pollinator plantings and the redistribution of soil toxins (2022-2025)
Dr. Snell-Rood is also engaged in public outreach, having contributed expert commentary on topics including how city life affects animal cognition and how students at the University of Minnesota are pressuring faculty to confront racism in academia.
