Emiliano Descrovi

Emiliano Descrovi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) at the Polytechnic University of Turin. He serves as President of the European Optical Society (2024-2026) and is a member of the Interdepartmental Center PolitoBIOMed Lab - Biomedical Engineering Lab. His academic career spans multiple doctoral programs in Physics and Engineering disciplines at the university.

Dr. Descrovi's research focuses on advanced optics and photonics, with particular expertise in Bloch surface waves, nanophotonics, and photo-responsive materials. His work bridges fundamental physics with practical applications in biomedical engineering and sensing technologies. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of light-matter interactions, especially in azobenzene-based systems and photonic nanostructures.

His recent publications demonstrate a consistent research trajectory toward developing novel optical sensing platforms with applications in biomedical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. The work shows increasing sophistication in manipulating light at the nanoscale, particularly through Bloch surface waves and metamaterials.

Dr. Descrovi actively mentors PhD students in Physics programs, currently supervising Nima Rafsanjani, Zongyuan Tang, and David Urban. He leads the Photonic Technologies research group within DISAT and works in the Applied Optics Laboratory. His current projects focus on revolutionary atmospheric sensors, cancer cell analysis using light-controlled systems, and bio-sensors for early cancer diagnosis using electromagnetic surface waves.
