Emilia Bachrach is a Professor of Religion at Oberlin College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her work bridges ethnography, gender studies, and South Asian religious practices. She holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin (2014), an MTS from Harvard Divinity School (2008), and a BA from Smith College (2004).
Her research examines how religious texts and practices intersect with family dynamics, gender, and class in contemporary India. Notable projects include studies on Hindu women’s ascetic practices in Ahmedabad and South Asian diasporic communities in Barcelona innovating non-state-recognized religious spaces like dance studios and shops. She co-authored a sourcebook on women in Hindu traditions (NYU Press, under contract) and publishes in journals like Journal of Hindu Studies and Fieldwork in Religion.
In Fall 2025, she teaches Feminist Research Methodologies and Capstone Research Methods. Her work has been featured by the New Books Network.
