Emil André Røyrvik is a Professor at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU. His research focuses on socio-cultural anthropology, political economy, and ethnography, with special attention to capitalism as a social system, financialization, inequality, knowledge work, and organizational management. He coordinates the interdisciplinary 'Ethnography' research group and participates in initiatives like Democracy Lab (with NTNU’s computer science department) and the Pacesetters project.
His key publications include the monograph The Allure of Capitalism (2011), awarded the SINTEF Prize for Outstanding Research, and co-edited volumes such as The Need to Count (2017). Recent work explores themes like Roma identities in neoliberal contexts, evaluation resistance in organizations, and the critique of financialization's societal impacts. Røyrvik actively engages in public dissemination, including lectures on neoliberal university structures and the societal role of casinos.
His research spans theoretical contributions to ethnographic practice, addressing topics from management theory to the intersection of myth and collective action. Ongoing projects include studying 'alternativity in polycrisis' and Roma lives in Bulgaria.
