Emiko Saldivar is a Continuing Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. Her research focuses on racial formation, mestizaje, and anti-racism in Mexico and Latin America. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from The New School for Social Research, an M.A. from the same institution, and a B.A. in Sociology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
Saldivar's work examines state policies toward indigenous populations, multiculturalism, and antiracism. She co-founded the Collective to Eliminate Racism in Mexico (COPERA) and is a founding member of the Latin American Antiracist Action Research Network (RAIAR). Her recent projects include methodological contributions to Mexico’s 2020 census for Afrodescendant inclusion and a study on gender, racism, and livelihoods in Costa Chica, Mexico, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and UCSB.
Her teaching spans theories of mestizaje, indigenous-state relations, and ethnographic methods. She has published widely on race, ethnicity, and statistics as political tools in Latin America, including her book *Prácticas Cotidianas del Estado* (2008) and peer-reviewed articles in *Cultural Studies*, *Critical Sociology*, and *Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology*.
Saldivar collaborates with international networks like the Project on Ethnicity and Race in Latin America (PERLA) and actively engages in applied antiracist research. Her work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing statistical literacy for marginalized communities to advance racial justice.
