Eman Abdelhadi is an Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on religion’s influence on everyday life, particularly among Muslim American communities. She examines how subcultural communities reproduce across generations, with a focus on gendered dynamics and institutional mechanisms.
Her work addresses intersections of religion, gender, and demography. Key projects include a book analyzing second-generation Muslim Americans’ religious attachment and a study on Muslim women’s employment in the U.S. She employs mixed methods, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Abdelhadi’s research has been recognized with awards from the ASA Sociology of Religion Section and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (2020). Her recent publications explore topics like gender ideologies among Muslim Americans, religious conservatism’s political impacts, and historical welfare policies.
Her advising and grants focus on training graduate students in sociological analysis of religion and gender. She collaborates on projects analyzing immigrant integration, urban Muslim communities, and the sociology of work ethic.
