Elsebeth Frey serves as Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University, teaching core subjects including crisis journalism, press freedom, online journalism, and trauma studies. With extensive international experience guiding journalism students and educators in Palestine, Uganda, Tunisia, Algeria, and France, she also edits the university's online training platform Journalen. Her institutional roles include membership in the Digital Journalism Media Narration Group (MNG) and Media, War and Conflict research group.
Frey's research centers on crisis journalism dynamics, particularly examining social media's role during terror attacks and emergencies. She investigates journalist safety protocols, trauma-informed reporting practices, and evolving press freedom challenges in digital environments. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in newsroom verification processes and ethical decision-making during high-risk coverage, while also addressing specialized areas like child welfare reporting and film criticism.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent focus on social media's dual role as both crisis communication tool and misinformation vector. Her scholarship demonstrates methodological rigor in discourse analysis and case studies of real-world events like the Utøya attack, with emerging emphasis on resilience-building frameworks for journalists. Key thematic threads include cross-cultural press freedom perceptions, interdisciplinary education models, and ethical tensions between newsgathering imperatives and victim privacy.
Professor Frey actively mentors journalism students through international workshops and curriculum development, notably creating pedagogical tools like 'The Rig' on press freedom. Her collaborative approach extends to partnerships with organizations including UNESCO, PEN Norway, and the Norwegian Police Directorate. Current research directions include comparative studies of journalist safety training and digital verification ecosystems in conflict zones.
