Prof. Else Starkenburg is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, affiliated with the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute. Her research focuses on the early history of the Milky Way and surrounding galaxies, particularly the study of first-generation stars through observational and modeling techniques. She leads the Pristine Survey, an international collaboration investigating extremely metal-poor stars. She has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Victoria (Canada) and the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics (Germany), where she supervised PhD students Kris Youakim and Anke Arentsen. Currently, she advises Akshara Viswanathan and collaborates with the Galaxia research group.
Education:
- PhD in Astronomy: “Galactic Archaeology in and around the Milky Way” (University of Groningen, Kapteyn Institute)
- Postdoctoral Fellowships: CIFAR Global Scholar (Canada), Karl Schwarzschild Fellow (Germany)
Research Interests: Galactic Archaeology, early Milky Way formation, metal-poor stars, galactic streams, and instrumentation for future surveys (e.g., 4MOST, WEAVE).
Notable Projects:
- Pristine Survey: Discovered 18 articles and 5 PhD theses studying rare early-generation stars.
- Co-lead for 4MOST and WEAVE surveys targeting metal-poor stars.
