Elliott Slamovich is a Professor in the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University's Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. His research focuses on low-temperature ceramic synthesis and biomaterial interfaces, with significant contributions to hydrothermal processing techniques for functional materials.
Education:
- B.S. Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley (1984)
- Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara (1991)
Slamovich's research program centers on hydrothermal processing of ceramics for applications in electronics and biomedicine. His work enables ceramic synthesis below 200°C, critical for microelectronics compatibility. Key areas include:
- Barium titanate nanoparticle production for DRAM capacitors
- Nanostructured titania coatings enhancing osteoblast adhesion
- Piezoelectric domain engineering in lead zirconate titanate
Scientific Contributions:
- National Science Foundation-funded research on piezoelectric domain orientation
- Development of hydrothermal routes for BaTiO3 thin films compatible with silicon processing
- Pioneering work on nanophase titania/polymer composites for bone implants
Slamovich teaches core materials courses including MSE 230 (Structure and Properties of Materials Engineering) and graduate-level Physical Ceramics. His laboratory specializes in hydrothermal synthesis reactors and biomaterial surface characterization facilities, with ongoing projects in solid oxide fuel cell cathodes and nanostructured orthopedic coatings.
