Elliott Schreiber

Elliott Schreiber is a Professor of German Studies and Director of the Global Nineteenth-Century Studies Program at Vassar College. He has been affiliated with the university since 2003. His research focuses on German literature, thought, and culture of the 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly theories of play and imaginative storytelling around 1800. He explores connections between literary fairy tales (e.g., works by Goethe, Tieck, Hoffmann, and Andersen), the toy industry, and tabletop games.

His teaching includes cross-disciplinary courses linking German Studies with Media Studies, such as the intersection of toys, stories, and imaginative play. He leads travel programs to Germany, studying board game history at Nuremberg archives and participating in the Spiel gaming convention in Essen. He serves on steering committees for the Global Nineteenth-Century Studies Program and Jewish Studies Program.
