Ellen Yi-Luen Do is a Professor in the ATLAS Institute and Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. She specializes in design computing, tangible interaction, and assistive technologies. Her research focuses on computational tools for creativity, design cognition, and health and wellness. She holds a PhD from Georgia Tech, an MDes from Harvard, and a Bachelor's from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. She has held faculty positions at the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgia Tech, and co-directed the Keio-NUS CUTE Center (2013–2016).
Her research interests include tangible interfaces, augmented reality, and embodied interaction. She has published over 170 papers and secured over $11M in research funding. She leads the ACME Lab and directs ATLAS Partnerships & Innovation. She chairs ACM TEI and C&C conferences, and serves on editorial boards for journals like AIEDAM. Her work spans projects like EdBoard (educational breadboard), Paper Robots, and AR Drum Circle.
Key awards include the Best Presentation Award at Future Technologies Conference (2020) and Honorable Mention for Best Pictorial Paper at ACM DIS 2020. Her labs explore topics such as data physicalization, haptic interfaces, and assistive technologies for deafblind individuals. She collaborates on projects like Virtual Cocktail and Sensing Kirigami, blending art, design, and technology.
Her educational contributions include courses on CAD and physical computing. She advocates for inclusive design, accessibility, and creativity through tangible systems. She performs with the Sensua Players, integrating music and technology in her personal and professional life.
