- BS, 1998, Oberlin College
- MPH/MEM, 2004, Yale University
- PhD, 2009, Johns Hopkins University
Ellen leads the Equity, Environment and Epidemiology Lab, developing innovative methods like portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for noninvasive bone metal quantification. Her research spans:
- Heavy metal toxicity (uranium, lead, manganese, mercury) in conflict zones and industrial settings
- Neurodegenerative disease risks from occupational exposures
- Environmental justice frameworks for community engagement
- Pandemic behavioral studies via large-scale surveys
Her 15 most recent publications emphasize environmental health disparities (Fallujah, Indiana), metal biomarker validation, and neuroimaging toxicology. Key collaborations involve NHANES data analysis and international fieldwork in China and Iraq.
Ellen teaches graduate courses in epidemiology and environmental risk assessment, mentoring students in methods like GIS mapping, biomonitoring, and community-based research. She maintains active partnerships with public health agencies and environmental advocacy groups.
