Ellen Kathrine Hansen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, part of the The Technical Faculty of IT and Design at Aalborg University. Her research focuses on lighting design with an emphasis on urban environments, architectural potentials, and health-related aspects of lighting. She has been actively involved in numerous interdisciplinary projects, including the LM2: Lighting Metropolis Green Economy (2019-2021) and Living with Darkness (2024-2024), exploring how lighting impacts human experience, safety, and sustainability.
Her academic contributions span 67 publications since 2001, with recent work addressing dynamic lighting systems in offices, elderly care facilities, and urban spaces. She has received the PLDC Award for Education 2017 for her contributions to lighting design education. Hansen frequently presents at conferences and collaborates internationally, including membership in the Lighting Design Research Group LiDRG.
Her research integrates transdisciplinary methods, combining architectural design, environmental psychology, and energy efficiency. Notable projects include the Seasonal Sunlight Chamber concept and studies on dark adaptation in urban settings. Hansen also advises on lighting policy and has been featured in media discussions on urban lighting challenges.
