Dr. Elizabeth Sills is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Texas at Tyler, affiliated with the Department of Social Sciences. She serves as Associate Director for the Underwater Maya Project at the Paynes Creek Salt Works in Belize, supported by a National Science Foundation grant. Her work at the Placencia Lagoon Salt Works was funded by the Archaeological Institute of America. With over 20 years in archaeology, she emphasizes student engagement through fieldwork and lab participation in archaeology and digital imaging.

Research Interests: Focuses on ancient economies, coastal archaeology, salt production in Maya civilizations, and the impact of sea-level rise. Utilizes sediment chemistry, 3D imaging technologies, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for preservation and analysis of archaeological sites, particularly wooden architecture. Integrates multidisciplinary approaches to understand human-environment interactions.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Archaeology and Digital Imaging Labs at UT Tyler, providing students hands-on experience in fieldwork and advanced imaging techniques.
