Elizabeth S. Roberts-Kirchhoff is the Associate Dean for Academics and a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Detroit Mercy's College of Engineering & Science. She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Michigan (1991) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Texas A&M University (1986). Her research focuses on analytical chemistry applications in food safety, environmental monitoring, and biochemistry, including the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to analyze dietary supplements and cosmetics, and the study of pesticide bioaccumulation in aquatic ecosystems.
Key research projects include analyzing atrazine metabolites in crayfish tissues and investigating heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic) in kelp, clay supplements, and salt products. She also explores pedagogical strategies, such as active learning and service-learning projects in chemistry education. Her teaching spans courses like Biochemistry I/II, Medicinal Chemistry, and Chemical Information and Safety.
- Grants:
- Co-PI for atrazine bioaccumulation study ($8,641, 2016–2017)
- Co-PI for XRF analysis of sea salts/mineral cosmetics ($6,600, 2015–2016)
- Key personnel in NIH-funded BUILDing Detroit initiative ($21M, 2014–2019)
Recognition includes the Salute to Excellence Award (2012) and travel awards from the ACS and UDM. She mentors undergraduate researchers and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects linking chemistry with public health and environmental science.
