Elizabeth Podnieks is a Professor in the Department of English at Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, specializing in Modernism, motherhood studies, life writing, women’s literatures, and popular culture. Her research spans diverse topics such as modernist motherhood, diary literature, pop culture figures (e.g., Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie), and trans parent memoirs. Podnieks has authored monographs, edited scholarly collections, and contributed to peer-reviewed journals. She is a leading figure in maternal studies, co-editing the Palgrave Handbook on Parenthood in Popular Culture and previously serving as founder and Area Chair of the Popular Culture Association’s Motherhood/Fatherhood section. Her work bridges literary analysis with cultural critique, often exploring gender, identity, and caregiving narratives.

Research Interests: Podnieks’ work focuses on the intersection of motherhood and modernist literature, queer and trans parenting narratives, and the representation of caregiving in popular culture. She has written on figures ranging from Virginia Woolf to celebrity mom bloggers, examining how maternal experiences are mediated through diaries, memoirs, and media. Her current projects include a chapter on Indigenous mothering and co-editing a handbook on parenthood in popular culture.
Publications: Over 20 years, she has authored or edited books such as Maternal Modernism: Narrating New Mothers, Rough Draft: The Modernist Diaries of Emily Holmes Coleman, and numerous articles in journals like Life Writing and a/b: Auto/Biography Studies. Her work has been cited in The New York Times, TIME Magazine, and other mainstream media.
Labs/Teams: Member of the International Association of Maternal Action and Scholarship (IAMAS). She has co-edited journal issues and organized academic panels on maternal themes.
