Elizabeth Ingleson

Dr. Elizabeth Ingleson is Assistant Professor of International History at the London School of Economics (LSE), where she teaches courses such as The United States and the World since 1776 and China and the United States since 1949. She is Academic Director of the LSE-NUS double degree MA in Asian and International History and a Centre Affiliate at the Phelan US Centre. Her research focuses on U.S.-China relations, global capitalism, and diplomatic history.

Her expertise lies in the historical transformation of U.S.-China trade, particularly during the 1970s. She explores how diplomatic rapprochement coincided with U.S. deindustrialization and China’s economic opening, leading to the rise of 'Made in China' as a global phenomenon. Her work combines archival research with analysis of corporate, labor, and political dynamics.

Her recent publications include the acclaimed book Made in China (Harvard University Press, 2024) and articles in Pacific Historical Review and Routledge History of U.S. Foreign Relations. These works trace the convergence of American capitalist interests and Chinese state policies in reshaping global trade.

She has received fellowships from Yale University, the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, and Southern Methodist University. She earned her PhD in History from the University of Sydney.
