Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman

Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman serves as Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of South Florida, specializing in the intersection of race, family structures, and socialization within Black Brazilian communities.

Her research examines how racial hierarchies permeate familial socialization processes, particularly through the lens of stigma navigation in Black Brazilian households. Current work investigates contemporary slave-like exploitation of informally adopted children and women (filhas de criação) in Brazil, building on her foundational analysis of racial features and familial coping strategies.
