Elizabeth Frankenberg

Elizabeth Frankenberg is the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Sociology and Director of the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on demography, health, and medical sociology, with a particular emphasis on the long-term impacts of disasters on populations. She leads multidisciplinary studies examining how natural disasters influence health outcomes, economic resilience, and social structures.

Frankenberg’s work integrates quantitative methods with field-based research, notably through the Study of the Tsunami Aftermath and Recovery (STAR) in Indonesia. Her research explores post-disaster recovery patterns, including mental health, mortality risks, and community rebuilding. She also investigates how socioeconomic factors influence health disparities, particularly in low-income settings.

Her contributions include analyzing the effects of extreme weather events on migration decisions and the role of housing reconstruction in psychosocial recovery. Frankenberg has pioneered the use of satellite imagery and geospatial tools to assess disaster impacts, exemplified by studies on Hurricane Florence and coastal vulnerability.
