Professor Elizabeth Coulson is Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland and holds a Professorial Research Fellowship at the Queensland Brain Institute. She maintains a 20% appointment at the Queensland Brain Institute and is an affiliate of both the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research and the Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research. As a founding member of the Queensland Brain Institute since 2003, she has established herself as a leading researcher in neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor Coulson completed her undergraduate Honours degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Genetics and Biochemistry. She earned her PhD in 1997 from the University of Melbourne's Department of Pathology, where she studied the normal function of the amyloid precursor protein of Alzheimer's disease under Professor Colin Masters. Following a year at the ZMBH, University of Heidelberg, Germany, she conducted postdoctoral work at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute with Professor Perry Bartlett, focusing on neuronal cell death in neurodegeneration and development.
Professor Coulson's research program centers on understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating neuronal survival and death, with particular emphasis on the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) and its role in neurodegenerative diseases. Her laboratory investigates how and why certain neurons die in Alzheimer's disease and motor neuron disease, focusing specifically on cholinergic neuron degeneration in the brain and spinal cord. A significant portion of her work examines the connection between sleep disturbances, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, and the development or progression of dementia. Her team is currently conducting clinical studies to determine whether treating sleep apnea can reduce dementia risk.
Analysis of Professor Coulson's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the relationship between basal forebrain structure, cholinergic function, and cognitive decline in aging and neurodegenerative conditions. Her work spans multiple methodologies including animal models, neuroimaging (MRI and PET), and clinical studies with human subjects. The research demonstrates a progression from basic molecular mechanisms to translational applications, with increasing emphasis on identifying early biomarkers and potential intervention points for preventing or slowing neurodegenerative processes.
Professor Coulson leads an active research laboratory that continues to make significant contributions to our understanding of neurodegenerative disease mechanisms. Her work has established important connections between sleep disorders and dementia risk, potentially opening new avenues for preventive interventions. The laboratory employs a range of techniques from molecular and cellular neuroscience to clinical research, reflecting a comprehensive approach to understanding and addressing neurodegenerative conditions.
