Elizabeth Burns is an Associate Professor in the Department of STEM Education & Professional Studies at Old Dominion University (ODU), affiliated with the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and an M.S.Ed. in Secondary Education, both from ODU. Her research focuses on school libraries, curriculum design, advocacy strategies, and educational standards, with a particular emphasis on integrating diversity and inclusion in library practices.
Her grants include a $370,000 federal grant (2024–2027) exploring social-emotional literacy and culturally-sensitive instruction, and a $61,187 federal grant (2020–2022) addressing the PK-20 information literacy gap. She has received prestigious awards such as the 2020 Instructional Publication Award and the 2019 Sara and Rufus Tonelson Award.
Her publications highlight themes like information literacy, school library advocacy, and standards implementation. Recent work includes exploring pre-service librarians’ research pedagogy and advancing equity in library instruction. She actively presents at national conferences, emphasizing community engagement and online learning innovations.
