Elizabeth Anne Sibilia is a Research Fellow at the University of Oslo, working on the ERC-funded PORTS project led by Associate Professor Elisabeth Schober. This multiyear, multi-sited initiative investigates global economic dynamics through port cities like Rotterdam, Piraeus, Pusan, and Singapore. Sibilia’s research focuses on energy transition’s impact on port development and maritime geographies.
She holds a PhD in Human Geography from The Graduate Center, CUNY (2019), an MA in Geography from Hunter College, and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Formerly, she taught Geography at California State University East Bay, San Jose State University, and the Macaulay Honors Program.
Her work explores how maritime economies shape inequality, including shipbreaking’s environmental and labor impacts. Key research themes include toxic geographies, financialization of shipping, and uneven development. Her 2019 paper on oceanic accumulation won the Ashby Prize.
Publications span Environment and Planning A, Focus on Geography, and co-edited volumes on toxic flows. Current projects with PORTS address decarbonization and port-city relations.
