Dr. Elizabeth Ann Pollard is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of History at San Diego State University (SDSU), part of the College of Arts and Letters. She specializes in Roman history, ancient magic, and gender studies. Her research explores women accused of witchcraft in antiquity and cross-cultural exchange between the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean regions. She co-directs the SDSU Center for Comics Studies and leads the Comics and Social Justice initiative under the President’s Big Ideas program.
Her education includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania (2001, 1995) and a B.A. from North Carolina State University (1993, Valedictorian). She has authored major textbooks like Worlds Together, Worlds Apart and edited volumes on Greco-Roman magic. Recent projects include graphic histories analyzing ancient Rome and modern comic representations of witchcraft.
Her awards include SDSU’s Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2013), CSU-wide Faculty Innovation Award (2020), and grants from NEH and IMLS. She has advised over 30 graduate and undergraduate theses, focusing on topics like Roman imperialism, witchcraft, and gender in antiquity.
Dr. Pollard’s teaching spans Roman history, witchcraft studies, and digital humanities. She pioneered initiatives like the Flexible Course Design Institute and collaborated on digital projects like Visualizing Roman History. Her service includes roles in SDSU’s GE assessment committees and leadership in professional organizations like the World History Association.
